Julia & Julia

Last month I read Julie and Julia by Julie Powell. It chronicles Julie's year of cooking all 524 recipes in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Powell's book is fluffy, but fun and entertaining. Definitely a good summer book. I initially picked it up because I had heard of it awhile ago and with the movie Julie & Julia coming out decided I should read the book first.

Upon further research I discovered the movie, starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, was based on both the Powell book and Julia Child's My Life in France. (Coincidentally, as I read J&J, Hannah was reading My Life in France. What are the odds?!) In order to 'read the book before seeing the movie' I had to tackle another book. I am almost done with My Life in France and it is quite enjoyable. In reading it I have discovered that I have a few things in common with Julia Child.
  • We are both named Julia
  • We are both tall Americans
  • We have both been to France (though I was there only 2 weeks, and Julia lived there for years!)
  • We both have big feet
  • We are both a little bit loud
  • We both love to eat good food
  • We both love (LOVE) butter in most forms
We differ in that
  • I have never published a cookbook
  • I have never hosted my own cooking show
  • Meryl Streep has never played me on screen (though some say my mother looks like Meryl)
  • I don't eat aspic

Good choice on the aspic! Those silly french people..."hmm what a beautiful plate of crudite, oh I know let's cover it in goo"

Apparently a nice tomato aspic was once the height of sophistication for the ladies-who-lunch set. I do not understand why.
